This Black History Month, we’re honoring one of our very own Boston natives, Kathleen Standford Grant.

🖤 Kathy was the first Black Woman to teach Pilates and a pioneer in the movement community. Kathy was a first-generation Pilates Instructor, studying directly under Joseph Pilates. In addition to being an incredible teacher, Kathy was an esteemed Dancer, Choreographer & arts administrator. She studied ballet at the Boston Conservatory of Music before moving to New York to become a professional dancer.

🤎 Kathy’s talents took her all over world, until a knee injury eventually slowed her down. Kathy was referred to Joseph Pilates for rehab, where she learned firsthand the art of Contrology–the original name for Pilates.

🖤 Kathy played a huge role in helping to popularize this modality. Her testimony was the driving force behind why we are able to use the term “Pilates” today. Kathy went on to teach dancers at the NYU, Tisch School of Fine Arts; where she taught a yearlong Pilates course, up until she passed in 2010 at 88yrs old. Kathy’s passion for Pilates lives on through countless educators.

We hope this serves as a reminder that Black Women were always meant to be in Pilates ❤️

✨Char Willingham is a seasoned Yoga Teacher, Sound Therapist, and Ritual Guide whose work weaves together movement, meditation, and ceremony for regulation and embodied reconnection. With over 20 years of yoga practice and a movement foundation in dance, biomechanics, and corrective exercise, her teaching blends alignment-based Vinyasa, breath-centered traditions, and trauma-informed approaches. ✨Keisha, a proud Haitian-American Afro dancer, is your go-to source for unparalleled dance energy and joy. While her love for dance has always been undeniable, her professional journey began in earnest in 2017 after three transformative years with Boston College’s traditional African dance team, Presenting Africa To yoU (PATU). It was during this time that she fell deeply in love with African dance, igniting a lifelong passion for the art form.

✨As a co-leader of Afrobeats Dance Boston (ABDB), Lakeisha has solidified her presence as a semi-professional dancer and visionary in the Afro-dance space. She has captivated audiences across New England and beyond, including opening for Davido, performing as a featured halftime act for the Boston Celtics annually, and bringing her vibrant energy to weddings, schools, and corporate events. Her leadership and creativity have helped elevate ABDB to new heights, fostering a thriving community of dancers and enthusiasts.

✨Lakeisha is relentless in her pursuit of mastery, challenging herself by participating in classes across a variety of Afro styles and attending Afro-dance conferences worldwide. Let’s get to know your Move & Reflect Instructor, Ashley Houston-King:

🌸 Ashley is a lifelong learner committed to the pursuit of joy, justice, love, and inner peace. A former dancer and Zumba instructor, she has always embraced movement as a source of joy, self-discovery, and connection. She is a 500-hour certified RYT at Down Under School of Yoga, where she teaches vinyasa flow and hot power yoga. In her classes, Ashley aims to create a warm, uplifting, and supportive space where students feel seen, valued, and a deep sense of belonging.

🌸 As both a student and a teacher, Ashley is deeply curious about the ways yoga can support individual and collective liberation. She strives to guide and learn alongside her students on their unique paths of self-discovery and healing.

🌸 Beyond teaching yoga, Ashley is a reading specialist dedicated to supporting young people in their identity development and literacy practices. She is also a Ph.D. student at Boston University, where she studies language and literacy in education, with a focus on disrupting anti-Blackness in literacy and reading education.

✨Britney is skilled instructor, dedicated to creating classes that nurture the body and strengthen the mind. She developed her deep knowledge and passion for Pilates through years of study and practice. In addition to Pilates, Britney holds certifications in Yoga and Barre and has a background in dance. Britney has had the pleasure of training and teaching in many spaces throughout New England, including Equinox, Life Time Fitness, Down Under School of Yoga, Soma Yoga + many more.

✨Understanding that starting a new movement practice can feel intimidating, Britney takes pride in creating a welcoming environment for all. She loves meeting new faces and is passionate about empowering her students to build confidence and embrace their unique fitness journeys.

💫Yera is a seasoned Healing Arts and Somatic Practitioner with more than 13 years of experience. Yera is professionally trained in Somatic Experiencing, Restorative and Yin Yoga, Meditation, Breathwork, Reiki, and Thai Bodywork. Through these modalities she offers a variety of ways to explore emotional, energetic, mental and physical well-being.

💫Additionally, Yera is a full spectrum birth worker, supporting families from conception, to birth and through the tenderness of the postpartum phase. Yera teaches a weekly Sunday restorative class at Soma Yoga Center (North End, Boston) and a monthly one in Stoughton. She also has guided meditations on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Insight Timer. ✨Yera will lead a calming Yin Yoga practice, to create space and move stagnant energy in the body. Followed by breathwork and a restorative element to soothe the nervous system and support the body towards a state of ease. This offering is to remind ourselves of the power of introspection and the innate wisdom within each of us.
